My Teaching Philosophy

Becoming a singing teacher has been a natural evolution of my passion and experience. My unique background and close collaboration with so many great singers, conductors, and directors has given me a keen understanding and knowledge into how to discover, empower and free the natural voice and performer. Each voice is unique and whether working with an untrained singer, or within the context of a professional singer’s existing vocal technique, I help guide and integrate breath support, somatic awareness, emotional responsiveness and expression, interpretation, language, musicality and performance confidence.

While there are important technical tools a singer needs to know, I also believe that this technical knowledge should be grounded in a simple and natural mindset. My goal is to develop a holistic, free, and authentic expression involving the whole human being.

Besides fine-tuning the overall skills of a singer or speaker, the benefits of holistic voice coaching can also help students reduce stress and anxiety, energize their body, increase mindfulness and kinesthetic awareness, heighten mental clarity, boost creativity, broaden expressive potential, increase confidence, facilitate authentic communication, and improve overall mood.

My Story

With my Dad, Tom Krause

With my Dad, Tom Krause

I combine years of professional singing experience performing alongside the greatest singers of our time and some of the most important conductors, with the unique experience of growing up and studying with my father, world renowned Finnish Bass-baritone, voice teacher and mentor Tom Krause. He was  a highly sought after professor at  Curtis, Academy of Vocal Arts (Philadelphia), the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, Hamburger Musikhochschule, and chaired the Vocal Department at the Escuela de Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid. As well as teaching masterclasses around the world, he maintained a private voice studio in Hamburg. I learned an enormous amount about music, classical singing, performing, the art of teaching voice, and life through him. I have vast experience with a variety of voices, both female and male, from lyric coloratura to dramatic bass, as well as  experience working with popular music and jazz singers.

Passion & Technique

With more than 25 years of experience singing professionally alongside world class opera singers, conductors and stage directors, I am in an extraordinary position to help the next generation of singers master their vocal and artistic techniques, to achieve their goals.

From personal experience, I fully understand the importance of finding proper instruction that helps free a performer while building a healthy vocal technique in a safe and supportive working environment. My own teachers include my father, world renowned opera singer and pedagogue, Dr. Prof., Tom Krause, Prof. Rudolf Bautz, and Helen Donath, I am passionate about passing along their wonderful legacy of teaching, knowledge, and generosity.

I help guide each student to reach their full vocal potential by establishing a strong foundation of breath support, which works in conjunction with classic Italian Bel canto methods such as phrasing, legato, vowel formation and placement. From my years of experience, I have a detailed understanding of how the vocal apparatus works inside our physical body, and how we can get out of our own way to allow our truly unique and authentic sound to reveal itself. To compliment vocal technique, each singer must have a strong dramatic foundation as well. To help achieve this goal, I guide my students in improving stage presence, projection, body posture, diction and language clarity, as well as understanding the dramatic character of each piece.

I also integrate breathwork, meditative techniques,
imagery, somatic awareness exercises, Unified Therapy, and Gestalt (when requested) to facilitate self-discovery and encourage freedom and the full use of a person’s artistic expression. This approach can help clients identify and explore emotional blockages, and physical holding patterns, that might inhibit expression, communication, and vocal freedom.

In addition to teaching the classical and operatic repertoire, I am also experienced in other musical styles such as jazz, musical theater, and pop. I believe for any singer, a wider range of styles can be an advantage in both marketability and artistry.

I love working with students of all skill and experience levels, and I will meet you at your current level to find the best course of action for improvement and growth. I am also passionate about helping students understand the many aspects of the performance career, such as repertoire selection, marketability, and the confidence to make the appropriate decisions for your unique path.
